EHS Student Finds her Niche in the Math Department
The math department at Episcopal High School offers many classes and opportunities for students inside and outside of the classroom. EHS offers rigorous math courses and math clubs, and gives students the opportunities to go to different events around Houston that relate to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Rising senior Hallie Byatt takes advantage of these opportunities, and will be taking three math courses next year. To prepare herself for this, she is participating in a math program this summer at EHS.
The math camp that Hallie is attending at EHS is a three-week math program offered by the Rice University School Mathematics Project. The purpose of this camp is to allow students to focus on topics that may not be taught during the school year. Hallie says that it will “prepare us for the rigor of AP Calculus and the AP calculus exam.”
During the next school year, Hallie will be taking three math classes: BC Calculus, AP Statistics and Projects. Projects is a second year Computer Science class meant for students who want to learn the process of app and website building and work independently on projects that they think of themselves. Hallie will be one of the first women to take this class next year. Hallie is looking forward to taking all three math classes next year and is excited for the challenge they will bring her. Hallie thinks that “taking three math classes will allow me to deepen my love for STEM, and the variety of math classes I am taking could potentially lead me to figuring out what I want to do in the future.”
Hallie’s passion for math began as kid. Hallie says, “I always loved puzzles as a kid, and math is like a puzzle to me. I love the challenging problems that you have to really think about, and I love the way you feel once you solve those challenges.” Hallie thinks math and the challenge it brings is a lot of fun, and because of that she is very passionate about math.
Hallie is still not sure what she wants to do with math in the future, but she hopes that the math camp this summer and the classes she is taking next year will help her figure that out. Hallie says that, “I don't know if I will go in the Computer Science route like my brother, but I do know that I will do something with math.”
