Discover 'The Color Condition' Installation
For four months, Discovery Green and Avenida Houston will be dressed up with colorful and vibrant streamer sculptures. The sprawling artwork dominates many of the notable areas of the park. Arcade by The Color Condition, a duo of Texas-based artists, lives up to its name. On a recent weekday afternoon, the eye-catching colors captivated park goers.
“It reminds me of Mexico,” said Leslye Flores, looking up at a canopy covered with hanging strands. Leslye and her friends, Samantha Farin and April Rethlake, stopped to have a mini photo shoot, taking turns snapping shots of one another underneath a backdrop of various hues and dyes.
In spite of the midday heat, the park’s new installation drew many people in. A father strolled as his young son ran beneath the streamers that swayed high above his head. Tourists raised their phones up to capture the interesting perspective of long yellow, blue, red, orange, green and white strips draped from above. A couple came across the lively scene after having lunch nearby.
Arcade can be seen as both a playground and a sanctuary. The experience can be wild and fun – yet calm and serene at the same time. “It’s peaceful,” said Reginald Green who leaned back on a bench as he looked up at the whimsical canopy of color. “There’s always something new at Discovery Green.”
When the sun comes out from behind a cloud, the reflective material in the streamers fills with light and the installation radiates. The colors really pop. Aracde by The Color Condition will be at Discovery Green until November, so be sure to visit the park before this experience expires.
Discovery Green and Houston First invite the public to celebrate the installation of Arcade at "#ColorTheAve," a free event on Sat., Sept. 9, 4-8 p.m., which includes a dance performance, live music, a wearable art workshop, an aerial performance and more.
