Sandwiches

The Desjardins made sandwiches for Houston first responders after Harvey.

The Desjardins family live next to St. John’s School and were trying to think of ways to help after Hurricane Harvey. Maro Desjardins – who was featured in our August issue for her fabulous breakfast recipes - realized that there was food available in the St. John’s School dining hall that would otherwise go to waste.

So she went over with her husband Mark, the headmaster at SJS, and sons Eli and Lucas, and they all pitched in to make sandwiches for Houston Police Department “who are working ‘round the clock,” she said. “We were just so happy to be able to contribute and be helpful in some small way.” Since then, the family has welcomed displaced friends into their home for a hot meal.

“As I like to tell my kids, food is love,” Maro says.

Bringing food to first responders is one nice idea to contribute with Harvey efforts. Find a list of volunteer and donation opportunities here. We’ll be constantly updating this list. Comment with any other opportunities you may have heard of, and we will add to the list.
