Houston Strong: A Theater District Benefit Honoring Local Heroes

Theater District Houston presents Houston Strong: A Theater District Benefit Honoring Local Heroes on Weds., Sept. 27, beginning at 8 p.m. at Miller Outdoor Theatre.

After Hurricane Harvey, the City of Houston really came together in an amazing way. The country, too, seemed to rally around our city. Although in some areas it may seem like everything is back to normal, there are many people who still need help, even if that just means lifting their spirits. If you’re looking for a way to keep helping - or want to combine relief efforts with fun cultural events - I’ve compiled a list of events that are being put on in support of Harvey relief efforts in the upcoming weeks.

Sept. 27 (Wednesdays, 12-1 p.m., through Oct. 25): Healing in Community After Harvey

Located at Rothko Chapel, this event seeks to unite community members in a peaceful setting and will host special speakers. The Rothko Chapel will be open every Wednesday night for free through October for Houstonians who want to come together to recover after Harvey.

Sept. 27: Houston Strong: A Theatre District Benefit Honoring Local Heroes

Theatre District Houston is putting on Houston Strong: A Theatre District Benefit Honoring Local Heroes at Miller Outdoor Theatre at 8 p.m. This free event includes performances from various companies under the Theatre District including the Houston Ballet, Opera, and Symphony. Donations towards Hurricane Harvey relief will be collected at the event.

Sept. 27: Flood Resource Community Information Night

This event will be informational and helpful for homeowners with flooded homes. The Flood Resource Community Information Night is being put on and held by the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center. Representatives from FEMA, the Small Business Administration, insurance and financial experts, Jewish Family Services, and contractors will all be there to assist homeowners with flooded houses on how to proceed.

Sept 29-30: Galveston Island Wild Texas Shrimp Festival

This festival is donating $2 of every Gumbo Stroll ticket to Harvey relief efforts. Tickets are $10 and allow participants to try over 80 different kinds of gumbo while walking around historic downtown Galveston. There will also be 5K race, boat show, children’s parade, live music, etc.

"Galveston Cares" Free Beach Weekend

In an effort to support Hurricane Harvey relief efforts on the mainland, the Galveston tourism community will host a free beach weekend Sept. 30 – Oct. 1 with special promotions to benefit relief organizations.

Sept. 30- Oct. 1: “Galveston Cares” Free Beach Weekend

“Galveston Cares” Free Beach Weekend is being put on by the tourism committee in Galveston, opening up all the beaches with free admission, free parking, free trolley rides, free family events at Stewart Beach, and a free fireworks show at 9 p.m. on Saturday (at 37th and Seawall). The Grand Opera House will also be having an open mic from 12-4 p.m. on Saturday.

Sept. 30: Harvey Relief for Local Farms at Axelrad

From 3-8 p.m., join Grit Grocery, Houston’s first mobile grocery store, at Axelrad Bar in Midtown to help raise money in support of local farmers and ranchers who were hit by Hurricane Harvey. There will be a grocery truck with local produce and more, and Chef Ara Malekian of Harlem Road Texas BBQ will be there serving food. Look forward to live music, too! All proceeds will go towards local farms and farmers.

Sept. 30: Healing from Harvey Write-In at Writespace

From 2-4 p.m., Writespace is allowing free write-ins to help Houstonians heal from Hurricane Harvey and connect with their experiences. Whether you’re a writer or a not, the prompts provided will help you understand your thoughts about the disaster and aid in a path toward healing.

Oct. 1: A Night for Houston’s Community: Harvey Relief at Avant Garden

From 3-11 p.m., Space Montrose, a store that sells locally made items, will be hosting a market at Avant Garden, accompanied with live music, food, drinks, and art. One hundred percent of proceeds will go to Hurricane Harvey relief.

Oct. 7: Benefit for Victims of Harvey at Big Top Lounge

Big Top Lounge is hosting a concert by Austin’s Mountain Time, donating all proceeds (tickets are $10) to the Lone Star Beer Disaster Relief Fund. The event starts at 7 p.m., and opening bands include Football, etc., Cool Moon and Astragal.

Oct. 14-15: Taste of Houston Festival

This rescheduled event is now serving as a benefit, where 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to JJ Watt’s Hurricane Harvey relief fund. Tickets are $5 or $3 if you bring a can of foo for the Montgomery Food Bank. From 10 a.m.-6 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday at Town Green Park, you can enjoy great food, drinks, live music, vendors, crafts, and kid-friendly activities like a petting zoo.

Oct 21: #HoustonStrong Festival

The #HoustonStrong Festival is taking place at Lucky’s Pub (801 Saint Emanuel St) near BBVA Compass Stadium in East Downtown from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.. There will be live music featuring local Houston artists, food, drinks, and family activities, with 100 percent of proceeds going towards Greater Houston Community Foundation (set up by Mayor Sylvester Turner and Judge Ed Emmett) to help community members recover.

There are more Harvey relief events popping up around the city, so keep your eyes open (especially on Facebook, where many events are announced last minute) for ways that you can enjoy spending time with neighbors and raising money for Harvey relief.
