Chandel Hancock was recruited as the newly formed Secondary Visual Arts Curriculum Specialist for HISD's District Fine Arts Department. Before the school year even started, her family was hit by Hurricane Harvey, and they lost everything. Instead of seeing the downside, Hancock did the opposite. She decided to contact all friends and neighbors to ask them to donate their discarded doors for an arts project she was initiating. Her idea was to take all of these doors to schools within HISD and have the students use them as blank canvases to tell their stories of the hurricane and heal through the creation of art. She called this initiative "Project aDOORe." These doors (mostly from the Bellaire area) were delivered to 26 campuses in HISD and have now been repurposed into beautiful pieces of art.
