From missing two weeks of school due to Hurricane Harvey, to the tennis team winning the 6A state championship, Memorial had a full fall semester. Some of the busiest students on campus were the seniors who had to juggle applying to college, taking final SATs or ACTs, and continuing to get good grades. Despite all of the mayhem they still managed to have a fulfilling semester.
Taylor Ochoa's favorite memory of the fall is "waking up on a friend's birthday and finding out it was snowing outside."
On Friday, Dec. 8, many students, like Taylor, woke up to find the entire Memorial area blanketed in snow. The area had not received the amount of snow it did for a long time, and it was the first time many students had ever seen snow that actually stuck on the ground. Despite this, SBISD did not cancel school.
For many seniors who play fall sports this semester meant the last time they would ever play in a game. Vicki Hrap's favorite memory is "winning the Area Championship volleyball game. Everyone was super competitive and really excited when we won, so it was a great second to last game." Connor Pivateau's favorite part of last semester was "the last cross country season. Running with my teammates was a great way to unwind from the stress of school ad college applications."
As the oldest grade on campus seniors are looked up to by the younger students. Sydney McCloskey's favorite memory of senior year is "doing Freshmen Young Life and getting to know some of the freshmen better." Young Life is the youth group at Memorial, and serving as a leader to the freshmen is a tradition that seniors for generations have upheld.
Now that they are second semester seniors, it is only a matter of time before "senioritis" sets in. Nathan Botros is looking forward to a more laid back second semester, and Allison Gentry is excited to find more time to be creative.
