The Newspring after-school art program in Spring Branch cultivates young artists and puts money aside for them for college. Newspring's Butterfly Festival, similar to the Cow Parade (where cows were painted and placed around town as a fundraiser for Texas Children's Hospital), featured 5-foot steel butterflies designed and painted by Newspring's student artists. The Friends of Westside Homeless Prevention purchased one of the butterflies, and it “landed” at Memorial Green. Also involved were Chris Fields, John Vassar, Brent Rager and Paul and Heather Burkhart. Westside Homeless Prevention has been helping homeless children and their families in Houston’s Spring Branch Independent School District since 1994 and Katy Independent School District since 2016.
