Volunteering with the Theta Charity Antiques Show with Kappa Alpha Theta sorority is a tradition that spans three generations of the Hamilton family. The family’s matriarch, Berta Denman Hamilton, pledged Kappa Alpha Theta in 1928 at Sophie Newcomb College, the women’s college of Tulane University. Berta was active in the Houston alumnae chapter and volunteered at the first Theta Charity Antiques Show in 1952 at the Shamrock Hotel. Berta’s daughters, Lois Hamilton Wright and Carolyn Hamilton Cruse, followed in their mother’s footsteps, as did sister-in-law Carolyn Burton Hamilton, all joining the sorority and volunteering at the Show in various roles, including as show chairs. The third generation is also keeping with the family tradition. Carolyn Hamilton’s daughter, Patricia Hamilton Blalock, and her daughter-in-law, Marci Curry Hamilton, and Lois Wright’s daughter, Mary Ellen Bos – all Kappa Alpha Thetas – have volunteered for many years at the Show, which has given nearly $8 million over its 66-year history to cultural, community, educational and medical causes in Houston. This year, the family is hosting a private event to welcome exhibitors to the three-day show, held Nov. 16-18 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
