Honoring Austin Tice
While working on their Webelos elective “Build Your Own Hero,” the Webelos II Den from Cub Scout Pack 130, chartered by Bellaire United Methodist Church, learned about a local freelance journalist who was taken captive while working in Syria in 2012. The Scouts decided to honor Austin Tice with the My Hero Award. They invited Austin’s parents, Marc and Debra Tice, to accept the award on behalf of their son. The Pack 130 Scouts learned why freedom of the press is important, and what Austin was trying to achieve by his reporting. They heard from the Tice family about how important scouting was to Austin, who is an Eagle Scout, and encouraged them to continue to Boy Scouts. Austin remains in captivity, and his family continues to work to find him and bring him home. Pictured is scout Marshall Smith giving the award to the Tices.
