Power of literacy
The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation will honor Betty Hrncir (pictured, reading to students) as the inaugural recipient of the Childhood Literacy Impact Award. Betty will be honored at the fifth annual Jungle Book Gala Nov. 8 at The Revaire chaired by Amy and Kyle McCully and Morgan Stautzenberger and Cameron Stubbs. Betty helped form and lead the Ladies for Literacy Guild, a volunteer auxiliary of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation. Since its inception four years ago, the Ladies for Literacy Guild has become a thriving organization of more than 300 members. Thousands of children have received access to new literacy programs through the Curiosity Cruiser mobile library and books to build their own home library. In addition, Betty and her husband, John, have served as co-chairs of A Celebration of Reading for more than a decade, which has raised more than $2 million each year for the past five years.
