In honor of this year’s Field Day theme, Audrey Hinton poses as a hero coming to save the day.
At Duchesne we have an annual tradition of Field Day. Taking place on a Friday, Field Day has a weeklong build up known as Spirit Week, where each day, all students are encouraged to dress up according to that day’s theme. This year, the themes were Pajama Monday, Tie Dye Tuesday, Walt Disney Wednesday, Jersday Thursday, and Blue & Gold Friday. From onesies to Elsa, Duchesne students had lots of fun dressing up, and despite the penetrating cold, Duchesne spirit did not freeze.
The theme of Field Day this year was “Superheroes,” where the Blue team battles the Gold team for the title of victor. Even though the Gold team has won the title for the past few years, the Blue team felt ready to take on the returning champions. Emma Bass, the eleventh grade Blue Team Representative, remarked, “I’m confident in our abilities to take field day. We are a strong team with valuable players, and we are ready to take down the reigning champions.” Saphia Zaman, the twelfth grade Gold Team Representative, had a different opinion. “We’ve led the gold team to success each year, and I am confident that we will win again,” she said, “we are the most spirited and determined team! Go Gold!”
Many lower school students had lots of fun dressing up as their own personal superhero!
Each year, a panel of students, voted upon by their peers, take charge in designing the theme, activities and flow of Field Day. This panel included Bass and Zaman, as well as all the other Upper School Blue and Gold Team Representatives who spend all night at Duchesne, decorating the school in accordance with the year’s theme.
After an exciting, cold day of intense competition, the Blue team ended up with the title, but the Gold team did not go down without a fight. Mary Rose McCorkle, a member of the blue team, said, “I’m honestly not surprised we won. We wanted the win, so we went out and got it,” while Sarah Calvin, a member of the gold team, simply said, “I’m confused.” Regardless of the weather or the outcome, everyone had a great time.
