The Wedding Date

Jazzerae Williams from Houston Public Library recommends this fun and flirty read.

Being a full-time student at The University of Houston and working for the Houston Public Library tends to limit my leisure reading. One benefit of working for the library is that I see so many interesting books that I might not otherwise notice. I typically enjoy a good thriller like My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing or almost any of Lee Child’s work, but I found this little gem one day and could not put it down.

The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory had me hooked from page one. It’s a fun and flirty read, with a well-developed plot and characters. I love a good romance and this novel delivered from beginning to end. The main character, Alexa, was totally relatable; she was smart, funny, career-driven and shared many of the same anxieties many women face today. Drew was a handsome doctor with commitment issues, who didn’t think love was in the cards for him. Drew needed a last-minute date to his ex’s wedding, so when these two met in a malfunctioning elevator and hit it off, he invited her to be his date, which began this adventure of lust to love.

The Wedding Date displayed interracial relationships which I struggle to find in many urban fictions and although they had their moments, they meshed well. For instance, there was a moment of awkwardness when Drew invited Alexa to a fourth of July cookout, and he failed to mention that she was African American. This relationship was never meant to happen, but Jasmine Guillory does a great job of taking the readers on this crazy adventure of two people in denial of their feelings for one another.

If you have not already picked up this quick read, get out there and add it to your list along with these other awesome novels. All are available in e-book form at houstonlibrary.org.
