Scouts for pets
We met each other in a Girl Scout religious-program class and became friends. We have a lot in common, like how we both are into anime. We are working together on our Girl Scout Silver Award with Houston Cares Animal Rescue. We are making cat toys, signing up for the Nylabone donation program, setting up a collar and leash recycling program through vet offices, and making schools aware of how students can volunteer to work and play with the pets. We chose Houston Cares Animal Rescue because we both love animals, and HCAR isn’t as well known as some other groups.
People can donate unwanted collars and leashes at West U Veterinary Clinic, Bingle Veterinary Clinic and Rice Village Animal Hospital. People can also follow Houston Cares Animal Rescue on Facebook, donate, buy supplies from the Amazon Wish List or foster animals.
For the Girl Scout Silver Award, you present a project on your own, with a partner or a group. We chose to partner up because we had the same idea for our project. After it got approved, we started working right away because it takes at least 50 hours of work for each girl.
We really like Girl Scouts. We both like camping a lot, and Girl Scouts has a lot of great campgrounds in the area. Lea likes the STEM classes and pet-care classes; Morgan loves meeting new people selling cookies and learning to fly a plane. Lea’s favorite activity so far was a camping weekend at Casa Mare in Seabrook for the “Journey” weekend about getting along; Morgan’s favorite activity so far was camping in Galveston and the whole troop dressing up and participating in Dickens on the Strand.
Girl Scouts isn’t just for younger girls, and it doesn’t have to be arts and crafts if you don’t want it to be. Because the program is “girl-led,” the girls get to decide what they want to do, as a group. It is a great way to make new friends and try new activities.
