After an early finish to their season last year, the St. Thomas’ Episcopal Varsity Men’s Basketball Team came back with a very strong and successful season finishing with the TAPPS 4A Semifinal game.
The team has faced many challenges from the difficulties of playing the season with COVID-19 to players out due to injuries. Despite this, the high schoolers have learned to adjust as they have progressed through the season.
“The team has learned the importance of hard work, perseverance through discipline, effort, and laser sharp focus throughout the season,” Athletic Director and Men’s Varsity Basketball coach Chris Twine said.
Justin Ruiz, junior at St. Thomas’ Episcopal, plays the guard position on the team. Playing basketball at STE for four years, Justin has experienced the ever-evolving mix of players.
“We got better as the time went on. Our chemistry and our work ethic helped us improve everyday,” Justin said. Their teamwork allowed them to accumulate many wins, as the season progressed. “Our biggest challenge was confidence. I feel like if everyone on our team would play with confidence we would’ve gone all the way.”
Although the season ended in a close but heartbreaking loss to Westbury Christian, the team members are all winners in the eyes of STE.
