Dougie holding his American Idol pass with ABC 13 reporter, Samica Knight.
On the morning of September 20, senior Douglas Mills was scheduled to sing for Channel 13 news and give a tour of the vocal department. Little did he know, his teachers had more in mind for that morning.
After concluding his song, the vocal teachers came out holding a card that read American Idol. Dougie had been selected to recieve a super ticket. So instead of attending the preliminary open call auditions, he would be sent straight to the producers to qualify and be sorted for the competition.
“I was so shocked and overwhelmed, I didn’t know what to think,” he said. “I believe I’m going to make it very far, but if I don’t, I will be happy with having the experience.”
Dougie also commented on the impact HSPVA had on his confidence in himself going into American Idol.
“HSPVA showed me to be confident by my friends and my teachers uplifting me. I want to thank Ms. Hall, if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be able to do this now.” Students and teachers across HSPVA without a doubt are rooting for Dougie every step of this journey, and wish him nothing but luck!
