Strake Jesuit’s Inaugural Hockey Season
This is the first season for the Strake Jesuit hockey team and it has been a successful one. It is uncommon for schools in Texas to have a hockey program, but Strake Jesuit decided to start one because many parents, coaches, and students were passionate about the sport and wanted to form a team. The school administration wanted to support this unique sport to further enrich the Strake Jesuit community.
The team plays in the Interscholastic Hockey League (ISHL) which consists of high schools and clubs. Strake Jesuit takes players exclusively from its school, but there are clubs that take players from select regions. For example, Memorial West includes players from Memorial and West Houston areas. The 22-game season lasts from October to March. Currently, the team practices at the Bellerive Ice Rink and has home games at the Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center.
Despite being in its first year, the team has compiled an impressive 18-1 record in ISHL games so far. They recently competed in the TAHA State High School Tournament in Dallas and had a record of 1-2, which resulted in a second place finish. This early success is a good sign that Strake Jesuit hockey has a bright future.
Once the ISHL regular season finishes, Strake Jesuit will be competing in the playoffs and Nationals.
The players are excited about this new team. Junior Ashton Kao said, “My favorite part about the team and about hockey is how fun the culture of hockey is. Talking in hockey slang is sort of like speaking a foreign language.” He is a relatively new player, so it is good to see that exposure to the sport has been a positive experience.
