Second Baptist School Hosts As Our Own Service Project

Second Baptist School upper school students hosted a fundraising event on campus for As Our Own.

As Our Own is a Christ-based, community-driven nonprofit movement in India that rescues vulnerable children from certain enslavement and exploitation, caring for them “as our own.” SBS juniors Caroline Marshall and Kennedy Brown are part of the Junior Board of As Our Own and wanted “to spread awareness and raise money for the movement while also utilizing our community right at home,” Kennedy said. 

The benefit of being in a school that starts in preschool and goes through high school is that we have an entire community of people who can work together, from the youngest students to the oldest. Caroline Marshall said that “Second Baptist School was the perfect place to host the event because the community was able to share the hope that we should all think critically, live biblically and lead courageously,” and this is exactly what they did! 

To raise awareness and funds for As Our Own, lower school girls in grades one through five were invited on campus for a night of athletic fun, donating to a good cause. With the help of SBS basketball, Golden Girls, soccer and cheer athletes, the fundraiser on February 5, was a hit! Girls came together to share their mutual interest in sports and spend time with JV and varsity athletes. The prospective dancers spent time with the Golden Girls, learning the fight song and dances performed with the band while future cheerleaders learned new stunts, jumps and cheers. Young basketball and soccer stars spent time with each team performing drills and playing games with the SBS leaders.

Caroline Marshall and Kennedy Brown also shared their passion for the mission of As Our Own with the young girls at the event. The curious little ones were able to ask any questions about As Our Own and learned more about how God can work within each of us to accomplish a huge goal. “SBS has provided me with a passion and love for service and we wanted to instill SBS students with a passion to serve as well,” Caroline said.

Raising over $2,800 to benefit As Our Own, these young women not only supported a cause that serves girls in need, but also created opportunities within the Second Baptist School community for future Eagle athletes to have mentoring relationships from the upper school athletes, learning what it means to serve others, lead courageously and live biblically.
