Event Roundup: What to Look Forward to This Weekend
Happy Friday and happy Mother’s Day weekend! There’s a lot going on this weekend. Here are some highlights:
Cinco de Mayo at Miller Outdoor Theatre
Enjoy the sounds of Mexican folk music with Jarabe Mexicano’s concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre on Friday, 8:15 p.m. The quintet performs on stringed folk instruments accompanied by lively percussion and vocals are in Spanish and English. The performance is free.
Mother’s Day Weekend at Bayou Bend
Celebrate Mother’s Day in a beautiful setting at Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens. Moms receive free admission, plus there will be complimentary cookies, lemonade, and water. Harpist Hope Cowan will perform live music. The event takes place Saturday and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. both days.
Festival of Eid at Asia Society Texas
Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, is an occasion of joy and festivity. Celebrate through food, performances, artist demonstrations, activities, games and more at Asia Society Texas on Saturday, 4-8 p.m. The event is free but attendees must pre-register.
48th Annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour
Get a glimpse into Galveston’s architectural history by touring privately owned homes during its annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour, which takes place over the next two weekends. In addition, there will be multiple special events for participants to learn about Galveston’s history across the island. Tickets start at $35.
Derby Day at Sam Houston Race Park
Don your most fabulous Derby Hat for Kentucky Derby Day on Saturday at Sam Houston Race Park. There will be a Derby Hat Contest (must be 18+ to participate). The first post time at Sam Houston Race Park will be at 10:30 a.m. First post for Churchill Downs is 9:30 a.m. and the Derby will run at approximately 5:57 p.m. General admission is $8; $5 for children under 13 and seniors over 62.
Mother’s Day Blues Party at Houston Botanic Garden
Wrapping up Houston Botanic Garden’s Sunday concert series will be Annika Chambers and Paul DesLauriers, performing a Mother’s Day themed blues party. Live music takes place Sunday, 3-5 p.m. and is included in the cost of general admission for Houston Botanic Garden.
Fab 40 at Discovery Green
If Mom is a Beatles fan, this live performance at Discovery Green Sunday, 7-8:30 p.m., will be the best way to close out Mother’s Day weekend. More than 40 musicians, including string and horn sections, will perform the music of John, Paul, George and Ringo, as well as Houston native Billy Preston on the keyboards.
Houston Astros vs. Detroit Tigers
The Astros take on the Tigers Friday at 7:10 p.m., Saturday at 3:05 p.m., and Sunday at 1:10 p.m.
Sugar Land Space Cowboys vs. El Paso Chihuahuas
The Space Cowboys take on the Chihuahuas at Constellation Field Friday, 7:05 p.m., Saturday, 6:05 p.m., and Sunday, 2:05 p.m. This weekend is also ALCS Celebration Weekend; there will be an ALCS Replica Ring giveaway and the Astros ALCS trophy will be on view at Constellation Field.
