A Welcome to All Scholars
Welcome back, scholars. Finally, after two years, we can get back to a somewhat normal schedule and the excitement that occurs every year during World Scholar’s Cup. For those who have not heard of this event, it is an academic competition that takes place in cities all around the world, and it recently just took place here in Houston.
World Scholar’s Cup is comprised of four team and individual events, that allows you as a team to gain points to win awards and move on to the next round. These four events include team debate, collaborative writing, the Scholar’s Challenge (around a hundred question quiz), and the Scholar’s Bowl (a giant team quiz). However, World Scholar’s Cup does not only include these, but also other invigorating activities that the scholars got to participate in and enjoy. Such as the debate showcase, where 6-8 of the top debaters get a chance to work together and debate, and the Scholar Show, which is essentially a talent show for those that are talented and those that are untalented.
In addition, one cannot forget about the Jerries. Jerries are World Scholar’s Cup’s mascot and, before you ask, it’s an alpaca. The organisation prides themselves on this as the alpaca is the symbol of modesty, humility, character, and perseverance, qualities which are seen in every scholar when they undertake the task of competing in this competition.
Over the past weekend, BIS Houston hosted this competition and had over 20 teams from their school alone compete in each of these events. It must be said that they achieved truly unbelievable things. Every scholar managed to walk away with at least one award and if not, then they always have their alpaca.
Now although each team has competed in this round, it does not mean that the journey ends here. Their next stop will be at one of the global rounds, which are being held in Prague, Shang Hai, Bangkok. Dubai, and Nha Trang. Additionally, if they make it even further, they get the once in a lifetime opportunity of participating in the Tournament of Champions at Yale University.
So, good luck and a pwaa (what alpacas say when they’re happy) to all that are taking BIS Houston further in their scholastic adventures.
