Michelada

Watching the big game from home? Elevate the beer to a Michelada. It's worth it.

The big Texas-OU game is this weekend, and a lot of Houstonians will be making the trip to Dallas for the game, which has been played there for 94 years.

Almost as important as the game is the State Fair of Texas, home of Big Tex, the Texas Star Ferris Wheel, and Fletcher’s Original Corny Dogs. There can’t be many people who have gone to the State Fair and not had a corn dog and a beer.

But if you prefer to forgo the throngs and watch the game from your living room (tune in at 11 a.m. Saturday, on ABC), you can still stir up some State Fair spirit. Frozen corn dogs are delicious, even if they aren’t quite Fletcher’s Originals. And there’s always beer.

Suggestion for your home watch party: elevate the beer to a Michelada. It’s not summer outside, but it is 91 degrees, so an icy, spicy “beer cocktail” will do just fine. Stir up a quick mix of beer, tomato juice, Worcestershire, hot sauce, and lime, and your game day goes from fun to super-almost-like-I’m-in-Dallas fun. You might call it a Longhorn Fiesta.

Game-Day Michelada

1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 lime, cut into wedges
¼ cup tomato juice
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
Hot sauce to taste (such as Frank’s Red Hot or Crystal)
Crushed ice
1 12-ounce bottle beer, cold

On a small plate, mix the salt and chili powder together. Rub the rim of a glass with a wedge of lime, then dip the rim into the salt-chili powder mixture to coat it.

Pour the tomato juice, Worcestershire, and a few shakes of hot sauce into the glass. Stir, being careful not to shake the salt and chili powder off the rim. Fill the glass with ice, pour the beer over, and stir again. Squeeze some lime over top, and garnish with more lime wedges.
