Kinkaid's Electric Lunch
Loud music, snow-cones, and smiling Kinkaid students filled the Houston Plaza for the first Electric Lunch of the 2022-2023 school year.
Electric Lunch has been a beloved tradition at Kinkaid for many years now. The event is one-hundred percent student-led. It began with a band called Hudson Cubed in 2017, and since has evolved into the annual Electric Lunch event which occurs at least twice in a given school year.
This year, the band is composed of students from various grade levels. The band includes seniors Joycie Brass on piano, Sam Dillon on bass and vocals, and Alex Jinnette on drums. Underclassmen members include junior Patrick Riley on electric guitar and sophomore Claire Hartung on vocals.
For the last month, the student band has met on a weekly basis. The crew rehearses on what Brass describes as a “pretty relaxed” schedule due to their many busy schedules and other academic and extracurricular commitments.
Their weekly practices have brought the group together. Even outside of school rehearsals, the band goes out to dinner and hosts more relaxed “jam sessions'' at their homes. Dillon explained that the group has become so close that they often get distracted, spending more time talking and enjoying each other's company than actually practicing.
“We play a song, then we talk for like 10 minutes, and then we play another song,” explained Dillon.
The friendships formed from the group are not the only thing that these students have gained from Electric Lunch. Brass also expressed how the event allows them to connect with the entire Kinkaid community.
“It is a fun break from the stress of a typical school day. Students just get to come together and have a good time - that’s what I love about it,” said Brass.
The band members encouraged other students with musical experience to reach out and get involved. They also encourage all students to come out, and watch their other performances this year.
“Every single time there is an Electric Lunch you should be there. It is so much fun,” said Brass.
