Creativity and community
I have been interested in creative writing for as long as I can remember. I like writing fiction because it helps me stimulate my creative mind, practice using my imagination, and express myself. In order to sharpen my creative writing skills, I took a summer course at Johns Hopkins Center of Talented Youth and a creative writing class at The Kinkaid School. From these courses, I have learned to love writing poems and short stories.
Because I enjoy creative writing, my sister Sophia and I decided to write and publish children’s books. Over the past three years, we have published three children’s books about our Lionhead rabbits, Fluffy and Snowball. They are pet therapy rabbits, and we take them to volunteer at the Brookdale Memorial nursing home once a month. (Read this 2020 Buzz Kidz for more.)
Our first two books, The Adventures of Fluffy the Lionhead Rabbit and Fluffy’s Haunted Halloween, were published in 2020. Our most recent book, The Two Rabbits and the Great Texas Freeze, published this fall, is about how Fluffy and Snowball find themselves alone at home without electricity after their family had to leave them due to the Texas freeze. The rabbits find other animals in need and try their best to help them survive. Although terrifying, the Texas winter freeze brought all the animals together and taught them the importance of cooperation and kindness.
This year, my sister and I were invited to be Community Guest Authors for the Kinkaid Book Fair. Our third book, The Two Rabbits and the Great Texas Freeze, was featured at the Kinkaid Book Fair from Nov. 6-8. A portion of the book’s proceeds was donated to The Kinkaid School and the rest was sent directly to National Compassion Fund - Uvalde Together We Rise Fund, to support the survivors of the deceased and those directly affected by the horrific shooting at Robb Elementary School.
We are proud of our work because we used our love of creative writing to write and publish children’s books while also helping others in need.
