Event Roundup: What to Look Forward to This Weekend
Happy Friday! It’s a big weekend: Super Bowl, weekend one of Mardi Gras! Galveston, and Valentine’s weekend. Here are some highlights:
Opening Night at The Rink: Rolling at Discovery Green
The Rink at Discovery Green, Houston’s only outdoor skating rink, opens tonight, 5-11 p.m. Opening Night festivities includes music by Yung Chris the DJ, skate performances, and more. The first 50 skaters in line will get free admission. This year, the rink features a rubber subfloor for increased comfort (and bright colors for photo opps). The Rink is open through March 17.
Memorial Park’s “The Biggest Picnic in Texas”
Celebrate the official grand opening of Memorial Park’s Land Bridge and Prairie project on Saturday at “The Biggest Picnic in Texas,” a free, family-friendly event welcoming the community to experience the new 100-acre space. Look forward to live music, face painting, self-guided tours of the Land Bridge and Prairie project, and more. Explore the prairie by collecting stamps in a personal passport booklet for a chance to earn special prizes as part of The Great Prairie Adventure. Guests are invited to “BYOP” (Bring Your Own Picnic - no glass containers, please). Picnic baskets with provisions courtesy of H-E-B will be available for free while supplies last. Mardi Gras! Galveston
The celebration of the third largest Mardi Gras in the United States begins this weekend with two headlining performances. Ghostland Observatory will perform Saturday at 6 p.m., and Secretto will perform Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Friday will feature the Funky Uptown Umbrella Brigade Parade & two others. Saturday will feature the Mystic Krewe of Aquarius and Krewe of Gambrinus Parades. Sunday is Fiesta Gras! celebrating Hispanic heritage, featuring 2 Fiesta Gras! Parades.
Sweetheart Festival at Urban Harvest
Urban Harvest is hosting their free Sweetheart Festival this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Houstonians will have the opportunity to shop local and prepare for Valentine’s Day, while learning about citrus from tree expert Bill Arndt and tasting seasonal chocolate covered Atkinson’s strawberries dipped on-site by market vendor Xocolla Chocolate.
Mardi Gras at Kemah Boardwalk
Celebrate Mardi Gras at Kemah Boardwalk this Saturday with fun family-friendly activities and live music from noon to 7 p.m.
Black Cowboy Legacy Rodeo
At the George Ranch Historical Park Arena in Richmond, four generations of Black cowboys worked alongside four generations of the George family, leaving behind a rich legacy of Black cowboy heritage that is unique to this part of Texas. Celebrate this tradition this Saturday with family-friendly activities at the Hitch'n Post and a rodeo competition starting at 7 p.m.
Valentine Twilight Tour at Rienzi
Celebrate Valentine’s Day early with a relaxing visit to Rienzi at twilight this Saturday. Enjoy live music, light hors d’oeuvres, and wine from 6-8 p.m. Docents are stationed throughout the house to greet you and discuss the works of art in the Rienzi Collection. All attendees must be 21 or over. Tickets are $40 for non-members, and $35 for members.
Galentine's Day Fashion Show & Market at POST
Enjoy a day out with the girls this Sunday at the Galentine's Day Fashion Show & Market at POST Houston. From 2 to 7 p.m., the event will include multiple photo ops, a fashion show, a live DJ, shopping small and 70+ local women-owned businesses.
Colors in Bloom at Color Factory
Houston’s interactive art museum, Color Factory, is hosting a new exhibit featuring blossoming confetti and larger-than-life bluebonnets. Tickets start at $36.49 for adults and $28 for children ages 3-12.
Super Bowl
The Kansas City Chiefs play the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday in Super Bowl LVII at 5:30 p.m. Rihanna will headline the halftime show. Fox is airing the game, which is available on cable and streaming on the following services: Youtube with Live TV, Sling Blue, Hulu with Live TV, Fubo, DirecTV stream. If you're not into sports, you might want to take a look at the cutest faux-pro athletes "competing" in the Puppy Bowl at 1 p.m. CT. The lineup this year: Team Ruff vs. Team Fluff!
