A lifesaving afternoon
A quick-thinking lifeguard and the teacher who trained him were honored with the Red Cross Lifesaving Award for Instructors. Lifeguard Joshua Davis (pictured, on left), an architecture and marketing major at Howard University in Washington, D.C., was on duty at the Bellaire Family Aquatic Center pool last summer when two children needed assistance within 10 minutes of each other. Davis rescued a 4-year-old boy who had the wind knocked out of him while jumping into the water, and just a few minutes later he helped a 9-year-old girl who began to drown after diving into deep water. Emily Heinzman (pictured, center), the manager at the Bellaire Town Square Family Aquatic Center, and the person who taught Davis his life-saving skills, also received the Red Cross award. Both award winners were recognized by Red Cross regional chief executive officer Charles K. Blake, Jr. (pictured, on right).
