Former Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD) teacher Christy Engvall (pictured) joins a gathering of Afghan refugee families as they learn American games like gaga ball and cornhole and enjoy popcorn and hot chocolate. After leaving an SBISD classroom, she now teaches English to Afghan women who are among the 10,000 refugees to settle in Texas since the Taliban takeover in 2021. Christy not only teaches women to speak English, but she also provides a support system for refugees who need assistance assimilating in their new culture.
