Event Roundup: What to Look Forward to This Weekend
Happy Friday! This weekend features official Pride Houston celebrations and lots more fun around town. Happenings include:
2023 Fade to Black Play Festival
The Fade To Black Play Festival is returning for its 11th season! The festival is Houston's first and only national short play festival to spotlight the new works of African American playwrights. The event features a total of 10 new plays of emerging African American playwrights with a runtime of two hours and one intermission. The festival kicked off on Thursday and runs through Sunday, beginning at 8 p.m. each day. Regular admission tickets are $35 in advance and $45 at the door.
Summer Symphony Nights Presented by Truist and Produced by Houston Symphony
For the next two weekends, Friday and Saturday nights, Summer Symphony Nights will take place at Miller Outdoor Theatre, a production put on by internationally renowned Houston Symphony musicians. Enjoy this family-friendly concert as they showcase works of the classical repertoire and rising stars of the classical world. All performances are free and begin at 8:30 p.m.
West U Party on the Patio Concert Series: AM/FM the 70s Rock Experience
This Friday, the AM/FM will be performing the greatest anthems from the ’70s rock era at the West U Party on the Patio Concert Series, 7-9 p.m.! Admission is free for West U residents.
Rainbow on the Green
Come down to Discovery Green on Friday for this family-friendly pride event. Rainbow on the Green features a performance by LA-based pop singer/songwriter JORDY, a Tina Turner tribute by Roxanne Collins, and a Mary J. Blige impersonation by Erika Sanchez. This event runs from 7-10 p.m. and admission is free!
Families with Pride
This Saturday, celebrate the second annual Families with Pride event at Levy Park. Enjoy interactive educational activities, hands-on art projects, face painting, a splash pad, ping pong tables, and more! Residents are also encouraged to dress up their fur babies and participate in the “Proud Puppy” parade which will begin at 9 a.m. This celebration is free and runs from 9am to 12pm.
Galveston United Beach and Music Fest
Head down to East Beach on Saturday for this family-friendly beach extravaganza. This event features eight live music performances, including one by the artist behind the iconic “cupid shuffle” dance, and an array of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Activities include free sandcastle lessons, glitter tattoos, a cornhole tournament, and more! This event is free to the public and goes from 10 am-6 p.m.
Dog Days of Summer Adoption Palooza
On Saturday, join Houston Pets Alive and 20 other additional shelters and rescues for this adoption palooza. Enjoy food trucks, vendors, raffle prizes, and most importantly adoptable dogs! All proceeds will go towards supporting the lives of at-risk cats and dogs and finding them new homes. The palooza will go from 10am to 2pm and admission is free, but you are required to register here.
Summer Community Celebration at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston
Escape the heat this Saturday and enjoy an afternoon indoors exploring CAMH’s current exhibits through a variety of interactive activities. This event will feature drop-in experiences like button making and photographic storytelling, a photo booth, a performance from 3-4 p.m., and more! Admission is free but RSVPs are encouraged. Activities will run from 1-4 p.m. and you can RSVP here.
Official Houston Pride LGBT+ Parade
Celebrate Pride month by coming down to the 45th Annual Official Houston Pride Parade which will take place downtown starting at the Houston City Hall. The parade is this Saturday, 7-11 p.m., and open to all ages! After the parade head over to Rise Rooftop for the official 21+ after party.
Road to River Revival
Count down to one of Texas’s hottest music festivals, River Revival Music Festival, by enjoying this free concert on Saturday at Historic Market Square Park. Enjoy performances by Ellis Bullard, 7:30-8 p.m. and Tony Kamel, 9-10 p.m.
Bellaire Open Air Market
Head over to Evelyn's Park this Sunday and enjoy this outdoor shopping experience which will feature several local artisans and small businesses. The market is open from 5-9 p.m.
