Happy Friday! There’s lots of fun happenings around town this weekend, including:
Houston Theater Week
Houston First presents a weeklong promotion in which the public can purchase 2-for-1 tickets to a variety of performance in Houston’s upcoming performing arts season. Houton Theater Week continues through this Sunday. Use promo code HTXARTS.
LEGO Play Stadium
The LEGO Play Stadium, located at Silver Street Studios, is a fun, free experience offering a number of activities. Kids ages 6-12 will love competing in a soccer shootout, catching a movie at the friendship theater, interact with lifesize LEGO animals, play the latest games at the LEGO arcade, express their creativity with LEGO bricks in the art studio, and more. The experience is free and should take about 30-45 minutes. The LEGO Play Stadium is available Friday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Reserve a spot here.
Fourth Annual Mariachi Festival
The Fourth Annual Mariachi Festival, held at the Wortham Center, will feature performances by some of the best mariachi musicians from across Texas. The lineup includes Latina Night with Mariachi Mariposas tonight, 7 p.m.; the internationally-renowned Mariachi 7 Leguas, Saturday, 7 p.m.; and Mariachi Imperial de America: 35th Anniversary on Sunday, 7 p.m. Soloist Eduardo Antonio Trevino, featured on America's Got Talent, will perform as part of FRiday's event and Sunday's event. Tickets start at $30.
Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners
The Astros take on the Mariners at Minute Maid in a three-game series: Friday, 7:10 p.m.; Saturday, 6:10 p.m.; and Sunday, 12:05 p.m.
Miller Summer Mixtape 23
Miller Outdoor Theatre presents the Miller Summer Mixtape 23, a two-day concert event celebrating Houston’s local music scene. Tonight, celebrate the 50-year legacy of hip hop with a talented lineup of artists, including a headlining set by legendary Houston artist Paul Wall. Plus, there will be sets by DJ Mr Rogers, LaNell Grant, AJ McQueen, Phill Wade, and Doeman. The evening is hosted by Keisha and J-Mac from 97.9 The Box.
Saturday is Country Night, celebrating country and blues music, including a headlining set by George Ducas. Joining him on stage are Robert Ellis, Kim Cruse, and DJ Mike; hosted by KKBQ. Both evenings kick off at 7:30 p.m. and are free.
Preseason: Houston Texans vs. Miami Dolphins
The Texans host their only preseason home game on Saturday, 3 p.m. at NRG, as they play the Miami Dolphins. Tickets start at $25.
Houston Dash vs. Washington Spirit
The Houston Dash take on the Washington Spirit at Shell Energy Stadium, Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $10.
Film Screening: Rio
Bird enthusiasts, bring your lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy a free, family-friendly movie, Rio, at The Water Works at Buffalo Bayou. Films as part of the series hosted by Buffalo Bayou will celebrate birding. At 7-8:30 p.m., HMNS docents will highlight bird facts. The screening of Rio begins at 8:30 p.m. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Rio is an animated film about a rare macaw named Blu who leaves his home in small-town Minnesota and heads to Rio to help save his species.
Downtown Aquarium’s 20th Anniversary Celebration
Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Downtown Aquarium with special events.This Sunday, there will be a kid-friendly DJ from 3-7 p.m.; mascots Sharkey and Nero, a kids’ education table, a kid’ craft table at the tiger exhibit; diver appearances in the restaurant, and more.
Houston Dynamo FC vs. Portland Timbers
The Dynamo play the Portland Timbers on Sunday, 7:30 p.m. at Shell Energy Stadium.
