Event Roundup: What to Look Forward to This Weekend
Happy Friday! We say goodbye to September and hello to October this weekend. There’s lots of fun happenings around town, including:
Family Movie Night: Super Mario Bros.
Family Movie Night, presented by Texas Children’s, features the Super Mario Bros. Movie (PG)! This free screening begins at 7:30 p.m. at Levy Park.
ROCO in Concert: Seismic
ROCO kicks off its 19th season with SEISMIC, an opening concert of epic proportions, featuring the full 40-piece chamber orchestra in two ROCO-commissioned world premieres and an exhilarating tale of love, intrigue, and adventure. The free performance takes place at Miller Outdoor Theatre on Friday, 8-10 p.m.
Mid-Autumn Festival 2023
Asia Society Texas' Mid-Autumn Festival features Taiwanese artists and photography, storytelling, and exciting art activities such as lantern-making, paper cutting, and faux mooncakes. This free festival will also feature complimentary access to the new permanent Explore Asia exhibition as well as the new exhibition on view Tsherin Sherpa: Spirits. The Mid-Autumn Festival takes place on Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission is free; registration (online or walk-up) is required for timed entry.
Sawyer Yards Art Ramble
Join Sawyer Yards on Saturday, 2-7 p.m. for the inaugural Art Ramble. Browse art from more than 100 artists, across four art studio buildings. Local musicians will perform and there will be local food trucks and drink vendors.
2023 Bellaire Foodie Festival
The 2023 Bellaire Foodie Festival, presented by the Bellaire Business Association, is the perfect opportunity to discover new foodie favorites while supporting local businesses. Attendees will enjoy food samplings, drinks, live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, and more. The event is open to all ages. The festival takes place at Bellaire Town Square, Saturday, 5-8 p.m. and tickets are $35. Proceeds from the event will benefit The William Heritage Scholarship Foundation, Bellaire Little League, and Bellaire Police & Fire.
"Flutter: The Monarch Butterfly Project" at Houston Botanic Garden
The Houston Botanic Garden and Open Dance Project will present the site-specific work "Flutter: The Monarch Butterfly Project" to celebrate and draw attention to the monarch butterfly's approximately 3,000-mile southern migration, which passes through Texas each fall. As visitors explore the Susan Garver Family Discovery Garden and discover three butterfly installations by local sculptor Meredith Tucker, the company of Open Dance Project will present a series of three half-hour, immersive contemporary dance performances, in interactive costumes by Houston-based artist Natasha Bowdoin. “Flutter” takes place Saturday and Sunday, 4-7 p.m. both days.
Saint Arnold Oktoberfest 2023
Saint Arnold Oktoberfest includes a full weekend of festivities at the Beer Garden on Friday and Saturday, 4-9 p.m. both days. Admission is free. Each evening, there will be high-energy live music, commemorative Oktoberfest 2023 mugs, limited release beer, a special Oktoberfest food menu, and a slew of Oktoberfest activities. Wear your favorite dirndl or lederhosen to enter the costume contest (starting at 6:45 p.m.) and have a chance to be crowned King or Queen of Oktoberfest. Throughout the evening, there will also be a stein hoisting contest, pretzel eating contest, and chicken dance contest.
Bank of America’s Screen on the Green: Cinderella
Watch the modern musical retelling of a classic story (PG, 2021 version) under the stars at Discovery Green on Saturday, 7 p.m. Free.
Salsa y Salud Produced By Foundation For Modern Music
Salsa y Salud joins Miller Outdoor Theatre’s 100th year celebrations with a special production to commemorate this incredible achievement. Featuring live music and choreography premiers commissioned for the occasion, a cast of over 20 artists will keep you moving in your seats or dancing on the hill. Salsa y Salud will perform on Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Free.
Houston Dynamo FC vs. FC Dallas
The Dynamo will seek to secure a playoff spot over their rivals from Dallas in the second-to-last home game of the season. The Dynamo play FC Dallas on Saturday, 7:30 p.m., at Shell Energy Stadium. Tickets start at $20.
Second Annual CITYCENTRE Biergarten
The second annual CITYCENTRE Biergarten returns this weekend with a blend of beer, camaraderie, and football. The public is invited for an outdoor pop-up experience including six state-of-the-art 65-inch TVs broadcasting all the fun football action. The Biergarten kicks off this Sunday and continues every Sunday in October, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Pets and kids are welcome. All spaces and picnic tables are first come, first serve.
Houston Texans vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
The Houston Texans take on the Pittsburgh Steelers at NRG Stadium, Sun., Oct. 1, 12 p.m. Beloved former defensive end J.J. Watt will be in attendance and will be inducted into the Texans Ring of Honor during the game. Tickets are $175+.
Blessing of the Animals at St. John the Divine
Pets will be blessed by the clergy of St. John the Divine in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. Bring your pet to the circle drive to be blessed, and enjoy a vendor fair of pet-friendly services and resources and greet guests from the HPD Mounted Patrol. The free event takes place on Sunday, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
