One can find the Saint Thomas' Episcopal gym packed on a Tuesday night, full of students, parents, administrators and teachers repping themes like American and tie-dye.
Before a game, STE’s Sports Club comes together to decide on the theme. From inspiration found on social media to old fan favorites, each theme is voted on and approved by the members of the club.
“Each week we get together and come up with new ideas for the theme,” said senior Sports Club board member Emily Johnson. “We use favorites from past years or look to social media for inspiration. Every meeting brings something new because all the members are very opinionated when it comes to the theme.”
Not only do the spectators join in the theme, players do as well. From matching warm-up gear to face paint and hair ties, the junior varsity and varsity players always seize the opportunity to get festive with their supporters.
Sophomore Wyatt Wire dresses up for American theme night. Wearing an American flag and lots of face paint, Wire fully embraced the theme.
“When we do theme nights they’re always a home game. I think as a team we get excited to see what everyone is going to wear. It also builds up a lot of good energy before we play,” junior varsity captain Jessica Sarabia said.
In addition to outfits, the student section always makes sure to bring their best when it comes to cheering. From learning chants to doing their best to distract the other team, the students always bring energy.
“Our student section is amazing. They come out every week with so much crazy energy,” Jessica said. “From all the cheers to even using a megaphone, there’s never a dull moment in the student section.”
While students make sure to cherish the founding traditions of STE, creating new traditions help to make student life more unique and memorable.
