Boo-Bash, a night of fundraising and fun
On Friday October 27, around 200 students gathered in the Carnegie Gymnasium in a room filled with streamers, skull heads, food, soft drinks, and loud music. It was Boo Bash, the first school dance of the year hosted by the senior committee.
From 7 p.m.-11 p.m., students from Carnegie and other schools were welcome to dress up, dance, and later, towards the end of the night – have an opportunity to pie a senior in the face.
Roxell Bonilla, one of the senior committee heads who planned Boo Bash, said the process of putting together the dance happened roughly two weeks before the actual date of the dance. This gave the senior council a chance to gather materials and supplies to create a spooky theme for the night.
“We bought things that we thought would look good; For example, we had a haunted entrance, so we wanted to do something like a blackout, spiderwebs, and spooky things along the floor where people can take pictures,” Roxell said.
Along with dancing and mingling, attendees had the chance to participate in a costume contest and pie a senior in the face. Roxell Bonilla, was one of those pied as well as two other senior committee members.
The senior committee wanted to focus on hosting a dance in the beginning of the year, rather than the traditional spring fling dance that happens in late May. Boo Bash helped them get a better shot at reaching their monetary goal.
“With [senior] dues, no matter how high they are, there’s always more expenses that come... So we decided instead of doing something so late into the year, why not do something earlier as well as something that would be a little more popular?” Roxell said.
At the end of the night, the senior committee collected approximately $2,200, all going to activities such as prom night, senior class trips, and other additional expenses. The senior committee hopes to encourage the tradition of Boo Bash, or other fundraising events for the senior classes to come in the future.
“We’re writing a process of guiding the next senior committee class on how to follow our steps, and what we did, what mistakes we made so that they can avoid it,” said Roxell.
Amongst the stress of planning, Roxell wants future senior committee members to enjoy the experience, and just have fun in their last year of high school.
