A tune-up to Tiras Field
For my Eagle Scout Service Project, I chose to update the area around Bellaire Little League’s Tiras Field in Mulberry Park. Last June, I reached out to Bellaire Little League about the project. Once we identified what would be most beneficial to Bellaire Little League, it took four months of planning.
On Jan. 5, the day before the project, all the material was delivered. Staring at 24 tons of gravel, 500 feet of edging and 1,800 feet of weed barrier in the parking lot, you could say I was a little nervous about completing my project before the start of the baseball season in three weeks. Fortunately, with the help of over 20 volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 222 and the Bellaire Little League, we were able to complete the project in just two days.
On the first day of the project, the volunteers and I laid down the edging and weed barrier and began the long process of moving the gravel from the parking lot to the areas around the field. The next day, we finished moving and spreading the rest of the gravel. We also leveled out the parking lot by spreading gravel throughout some areas that had large pot holes. My uncle and I had spent some time beforehand building planters with leftover materials, and I also assembled four benches that will be used for seating along right field.
I enjoyed working with all the volunteers to make this project a success. My brothers play Bellaire Little League and I know that this update will have an impact. This project could not have happened without Bellaire Little League’s president Sam Dagley and Joey Canahuati of Moss Landscaping. Through Mr. Canahuati’s contacts, we were able to get all the gravel donated, as well as tools and equipment.
In the end, it was a community effort with generous donors who helped me raise $3,000, as well as my friends, family members, scouts, and volunteers that donated their time and muscle. The most rewarding part of the project was knowing that the Bellaire Little League community will be able to enjoy this for years to come!
