Memorial Day Weekend Event Roundup
Happy Friday! We’ve gathered all the Houston happenings for this long weekend. There’s plenty of fun events, including the Market Square Farmers’ Market and Comicpalooza, along with meaningful ways to commemorate Memorial Day and honor those who served.
Dancin’ In The Street… Motown & More Revue at Miller Outdoor Theater
The Bacement Foundation for the Arts presents the 25th season production of Houston’s very own Dancin’ in the Street… Motown and More Revue at Miller Outdoor Theatre. This free event takes place today and Saturday at 8:15 p.m. The soul-filled weekend consists of the city’s hottest talent who will perform the greatest R&B, soul and funk hits, featuring the sounds of Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Tina Turner, and the best of ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s classics.
MFAH Vertigo of Color: Matisse, Derain, and the Origins of Fauvism
The MFAH Vertigo of Color exhibit is making its debut in the United States. The exhibit features some of the most celebrated works of Fauvism, which is a French style of art with bright colors, form, and structure. The exhibit is set up at the Caroline Wiess Law Building with ticket prices beginning at $24. The exhibit will be open to attendees until the end of the day on Monday, May 27.
Comicpalooza 2024
Comicpalooza is returning to George R. Brown Convention Center this weekend. Doors will open today at 2 p.m. Attendees will have the chance to view unique art and collectibles as well as engage in panels and special attractions. Some of the special guests include Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite), Rose McGowan and Shannon Doherty (Charmed), and Michael J. Fox (Back to the Future). Adult day passes range from $50-74. Adult weekend passes are $105, and a children’s weekend pass is $6.
Houston Dash vs. North Carolina Courage
The Houston Dash team is taking on the North Carolina Courage tonight at 7 p.m. The game will be hosted at the Shell Energy Stadium with tickets beginning at $12. Enjoy some professional soccer and cheer on Houston’s women’s soccer team.
Memorial Walk at Memorial Park
Memorial Park is hosting a walk along the Seymour Lieberman Trail in honor of those who dedicated their lives to the U.S. military. Before the walk begins, participants are invited to sign the name of a lost loved one on the Memorial Banner. The walk starts at 7 a.m. on Saturday. The event is free and doesn’t require registration.
Market Square Park Farmers Market in Downtown
The family- and pet-friendly farmers market pop-up provides fresh produce plus live entertainment. You can reserve a free ticket here. This Saturday is the last weekend for the market. It goes from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. and is located at the Market Square Park in Downtown Houston.
Professional Sandcastle Building Lessons at East Beach
Learn to build sandcastles from a professional builder during Sandcastle Days on East Beach in Galveston. Free lessons will take place on the water’s edge straight down from the East Beach Pavilion. The lessons will be Saturday, and times vary. Registration is not required.
Screen on the Green — Wonka at Discovery Green
Enjoy this special screening of Wonka under the stars at Discovery Green. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs, and pack some of your favorite snacks to watch this musical fantasy. This free event takes place on Saturday from 7-9 p.m.
Bellaire Open Air Summer Market at Evelyn's Park
Shop from local artisans and small businesses at the Bellaire Open Air Summer Market at Evelyn’s Park. The market is free and will take place on Sunday from 12-4 p.m. Parking is available in the Newcastle and Mulberry lots, and overflow parking will be available at Bellaire United Methodist Church at Newcastle and Bellaire Blvd.
Houston Running Co. Memorial Day 10K and 5K
Houston Running Co. is hosting a Memorial Day 10K, 5K, and a 1K for kids and families to honor those who have sacrificed their lives serving in the U.S. military. The races will take place on Monday at St. Thomas High School. The 5K and 10K will start at 7:30 a.m., followed by the Kids/Family 1K at 9:30 a.m. Registration is $30 for the kids/family 1k, $55 for the 5k, and $65 for the 10k.
