I began playing piano in the first grade when I was six years old. When I was in first grade, the pandemic caused me to sit around without much to do, so I asked my dad to help me with piano. I asked him if he could help me learn to play Für Elise by Beethoven. It's a cool sounding song, and it seemed like something I might be able to play. My dad didn't think I'd be able to play it right away, but that motivated me to work really hard and get better. I put my mind to it and was able to do it after maybe a month.
Then, I wanted to learn an even harder song called Rondo alla Turca by Mozart, and this time my dad did think I'd be able to play it... and I did.
For the past four years, I have participated in The Houston Forum Young Artists Competition. Every year, I have competed in the age group at least one year above mine. This year, as a 10-year-old, I competed in the 12-year-old division. Every year except my first, I have made the finals. I like competing in the older age groups because it pushes me to get better.
My favorite part of playing the piano is learning new songs and performing them. I have performed several times in front of my church and my school. I have also been in multiple piano recitals playing in front of friends and family.
I recently competed with a piece by J.S. Bach, and in the same week at my fifth-grade talent show played Piano Man by Billy Joel. The parents seemed to like that one.
The thing that I've learned the most through playing piano is that whenever you start something new, even if you are talented, you will get discouraged and have frustrations. But, with lots of hard work and practice, you will get better over time.
As I grow up, I would like to continue performing in front of people, and learn more difficult pieces.
