Lanier Middle School seventh grader Caleb Liu (pictured, second from left, with Joshua Pullara, coach Paul Barnes, and Derek Purdue) won first place in the Optimist division at the Battleship Texas Regatta. More than 80 sailors competed at the Houston Yacht Club in the fundraising event to support the Battleship Texas Foundation’s efforts to restore the historic Battleship USS Texas BB-35 Museum in Galveston. Young competitors participate in the club’s Ragnot sailing program where they learn to sail in a variety of weather conditions and learn the safety skills required to navigate on the water. Caleb is new to competitive sailing and has attended numerous Texas sailing races over the last year. Looking to the future, he hopes to continue to advance and represent the nation at international events.
