For many, this week marked the beginning of a new school year. Whether you’re back to packing school lunches or not, here are some fun ways to spend the weekend.
Houston Astros vs. Chicago White Sox
It’s Hall of Fame Weekend, in which a new class of Astros Hall of Famers will be honored throughout the weekend as the Astros take on the White Sox. Fans will have the opportunity to grab giveaways like a Jose Altuve replica jersey, a commemorative Altuve bobblehead, and a retro Astros duffle bag. The schedule of games is as follows: Friday, 7:10 p.m., Saturday, 6:10 p.m., and Sunday, 1:10 p.m. Tickets start at $20.
Malibu Barbie Café Houston: Pop-Up Experience
If you love Barbie and all things pink, you won’t want to miss the Malibu Barbie Café pop-up experience, which opens today and will be available at Junction HTX through mid-October. The family-friendly pop-up restaurant and roller rink includes casual food and drinks and a variety of fun, interactive activities. Each roller skate rental ($1) will be donated back to Girls INC. Tickets for the restaurant are $25 and includes food and merchandise credit.
Summer Species: Butterfly Walk
Learn about local butterfly species, life cycle, and habitat on this discovery tour of Buffalo Bayou with Nancy Greig, founding director of the Cockrell Butterfly Center (now retired). Meet at Jackson Hill Bridge (on the Allen Parkway side) just east of Flora Restaurant, Saturday, 9-10:30 a.m. Parking is recommended at the 300 block of Jackson Hill Street off Memorial Drive. Walking tours are 90 minutes and cover approximately 3 miles. Comfortable clothing and good walking shoes recommended. Free. RSVP recommended.
Incredible India: Krishnaa: Fire to Frost at Miller Outdoor Theatre
Miller Outdoor Theatre and Indian Performing Arts Samskriti present Incredible India: Krishnaa: Fire to Frost under the stars at Miller, tonight, 8:30 p.m. The show features the Abhinava Dance Company telling the story of Draupadi – one of the most memorable characters in the great Indian epic, the Mahabharata – through narration, song, and dance. Free.
NFL Preseason: Houston Texans vs. New York Giants at NRG Stadium
Saturday at noon marks the first home game of the NFL preseason. The Texans face the Giants in one of two home matchups leading to the new season in September. Tickets start at $40.
LEGO Night with Houston Toy Museum at Houston Botanic Garden
Houston Toy Museum and Houston Botanic Garden host LEGO Night at the Garden on Saturday, 5-8 p.m. Pre-order a LEGO set from the Houston Toy Museum and get creative inspiration from a beautiful outdoor setting. There are outdoor and climate-controlled indoor spaces available for builders. General admission to the Garden is $10/adult, $7.50 per child/student during their Dog Days of August promotion (which also allows visitors to bring their furry friends on leash).
Star Party at the Park
Memorial Park hosts a Star Party Saturday, 7:30 p.m. with astronomers from Houston Astronomical Society to educate visitors about constellations, planets, and more. Free.
Miller Summer Mixtape '24
Miller Outdoor Theatre presents its annual Summer Mixtape ’24, a vibrant celebration of Houston’s local music scene. The event features musicians spanning a variety of genres including psychedelic funk, rock, norteño, and hip-hop. The lineup will feature performances and appearances by Kam Franklin, EZ Band, Skyrah Bliss, Shelby Ruger, DJ Kardiac, and DJ Michele McKnight. Additionally, this year, Miller Summer Mixtape has teamed up with “The Vibe,” powered by KTSU 90.9FM. Summer Mixtape takes place on Saturday, 8 p.m., and is free.
Karbach Latina Festival
Karbach Brewing Co. is hosting an all Latina entrepreneur, artist, curator, and makers event on Sunday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Bring your dancing shoes and head to Karbach to enjoy Latin beats and salsa vibes by Houston Latina DJs, free salsa classes, cold brews and spicy local bites. Free to attend.
