Carolyn Rubenstein and her son Eli Karpas (pictured) recently joined the select group of adventurers who have summitted Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. A 2024 graduate of The Emery/Weiner School, Eli initially planned to travel to Tanzania over the summer to volunteer with Neema International, an educational nonprofit organization founded by an Emery graduate, with fellow Emery students. After some encouragement from Carolyn, he added the mountain adventure to his post-high school graduation trip itinerary. The duo trained for months to summit the 19,341-foot-tall peak, and along with guides and multiple layers of clothing, they made it. The trek spanned six days and 36 miles, and the view from above the clouds was well worth the effort.
