A smoker from scratch

Stratford High School recent graduates Julian Hemmer, Tyler Spann, Richard Conticello, Marin Pavlin, and Nathan Moss (pictured, from left) brought classroom learning to life when they built a BBQ smoker on a trailer as a capstone project with the Academy of Science and Engineering. Stratford’s Academy of Science and Engineering is a selective two-year program that students apply for after meeting the prerequisites. The boys started from scratch and learned all the parts of building a functional smoker, including welding and using power tools like a torch, cutoff saw, and an angle grinder. They organized fundraising efforts to purchase equipment including a 250-gallon propane tank and received generous donations of metal plates from a local engineering company. After many long weekends working on the project, it is finally complete, including licensing and registration for the now street-legal trailer.
