Music selections feature recent Apollo commissions, including With Malice Toward None by Black Vietnam veteran composer J. Kimo Williams; Revise? by Emmy-winning composer Jasmine Barnes and Houston Poet Laureate Emeritus Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton; Quantopia/The Thought Police by Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky; and Firewall by Houston-based composer Mark Buller.

The 2025-26 marks 100 years of West University Elementary School. Kick off the centennial with a community-wide parade. Current students, proud alumni, and West U neighbors are invited to join the festivities. The parade takes place from 9-9:30 around the school, starting on Auden in front of the library. After the parade, continue the celebration with water inflatable activities (pack swimsuits) on Gibson, Ahrens, and Old Ahrens Fields, food trucks on Goode St., and a firetruck water spray finale on Bullard Field around 10:30 a.m. Food will be available for purchase from food trucks on Goode St. Read more about WUES and its impact over the years in The School that Shaped a Town by Cathy Gordon (Aug. 2025 issue).
Evergreen Duck Derby - We Are Evergreen

$5 per duck/$25 for 6/$100 for 40
Numbered duckies will race down the pool, and the first to cross the finish line wins a prize! Everyone gets to keep their ducks, and after the race, stick around for swimming and fun. The race starts at 10 a.m.! We Are Evergreen was launched to transform and improve Evergreen Park + Pool.

Lucy Dillon, one of the Camp Mystic campers whose lives was lost in the July 4th flood, was a regular at the Memorial Villages Farmers Market. Join on Sat., Aug. 23, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. for Bright Like Lucy Day, benefiting the Bright Like Lucy Legacy Fund. There will be music, face painting, a balloon entertainer, special Bright Like Lucy swag, and more.
