Fotofest 2020: "Stepping into the Land of Dreams"

Nikolay Drachinsky

Opening Reception: Friday, March 13, 7:30 p.m.

This year, the international biennale is dedicated to the contemporary photography of Africa. At the CaviArt gallery, two exhibitions will be presented:

Photographs that were shot in 1957 in Northern and Southern Sudan by Soviet photojournalist and exhibition curator Nikolay Drachinsky (1917-1978). This exhibition comprises 28 color and black-and-white prints from the original negatives. These works make up one of the first photo reportages from the African continent published in Soviet media. While depicting reality from the perspective of class theory and anti-colonialism, Drachinsky’s visual story from Sudan is rich with his profoundly personal approach.

Plus, a collection of photos taken by Houston photographers Misha Tuvin and Natasha Artushin during their 2017 travel to Ethiopia, Madagascar and Namibia.

Open through April 17. See details and hours here.
