Friends of Down Syndrome’s 6th Annual Cinderella Ball

Maritza Ibarra

Maritza Ibarra, a student at the Down Syndrome Academy in Houston, celebrates World Down Syndrome Day at a past Friends of Down Syndrome Cinderella Ball.

This year, Houston’s Friends of Down Syndrome will celebrate teens and adults with Down syndrome in our area at the 6th annual Cinderella Ball on March 21 - World Down Syndrome Day - at the Norris Convention Center’s Red Oak Ballroom in CityCentre.

At the Down Syndrome Academy, which uniquely serves only teens and adults with Down syndrome, students spend Monday, Wednesday and Friday taking classes in reading, math, science, Texas history, music and health/physical education. On Tues-days and Thursdays, the students learn job skills and other skills, such as sewing and gardening. They also continue with their physical education, as well as build bird-houses and other items to sell to the public at various events.

The school’s largest annual fundraiser is the Cinderella Ball, held at Houston’s CityCentre. In order to keep the Down Syndrome Academy accessible to families of various socio-economic levels, tuition at the Academy is kept low and fundraisers and private donations are a primary source of funding.
