George Washington’s Tent Visits Bayou Bend

For President’s Day weekend, the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia brings its replica of George Washington’s tent to Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens! (Photo courtesy of Museum of Fine Arts, Houston)

The Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia brings its replica of George Washington’s tent to Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens.

“The First Oval Office” is the tent Washington used as his mobile headquarters during the Revolutionary War. The hand-stitched replica transforms Bayou Bend’s Diana Lawn into an encampment with special displays and living-history interpreters in authentic reproduction costumes.

Inside Bayou Bend’s historic house, eight rooms reflect the Revolutionary era. Highlights include silver made by Paul Revere in the Metals Study Room; prints in the Chippendale Bedroom depicting the American Revolution; and ceramics owned by George Washington in the Drawing Room.

In the gardens, families are invited to enjoy a variety of activities, such as a scavenger hunt; an artist who makes commemorative silhouettes; storytelling; music by the Texas Army Fife & Drum Corps; poetry readings; and art projects for constructing peace medals and military drums.
