Houston Reads Day 2024

Literacy Now, a local nonprofit dedicated to empowering children and families through literacy and life skills, will host its fourth annual Houston Reads Day. Houston Reads Day is a dedicated day for Houstonians to come together to read to students, support Literacy Now’s critical Reading Intervention program, and bring awareness to the literacy crisis in our city.

For Houston Reads Day, Literacy Now will bring together more than 375 volunteers to read to over 14,000 Pre-K-3rd grade students in a total of 42 schools across the Houston area. Houston Reads Day coincides with National Read Across America Day on March 2 and kicks off Read Aloud Month.

Additionally, this year’s event will feature books by local Houston authors, which will be read to participating classrooms:
• Pre-K: Spencer Knows Spring by Tiffany Obeng
• Kinder: Ava and the Prince by Joy Sewing
• 1st grade: The Yellow Butterfly by Mehrnaz S. Gill
• 2nd grade: Yasmin the Friend by Saadia Faruqi
• 3rd grade: Shiver by Melissa Williams

Each participating school will also receive a basket of books for their library.
1. We encourage everyone to join the fun on March 1 by reading to a child in their life for just 15 minutes.
2. Share photos of your reading session on social media using the hashtag #HoustonReadsDay to help spread awareness about Houston Reads Day and the literacy crisis in our city.
3. Donate to the cause:
4. There are limited volunteer slots for this year’s event – check availability here: The deadline to register as a volunteer is 2/19/2024.
