The Jung Center's Spring Benefit

The Jung Center presents comedian Gary Gulman in "It's Okay to Laugh" - a humorous and heartfelt discussion about the artist's struggle with major depression - for its annual Spring Benefit at River Oaks Country Club, March 29, 7:30 p.m. Gary Gulman is one of the most popular comics in the country, having released four televised comedy specials,  three albums, and joining the ranks of the elite few comics to appear on every major late-night television comedy program. Yet for years, Gary suffered bouts of debilitating depression that made it nearly impossible to get out of bed.

In 2019, after healing from his most severe depressive episode, Gulman opened up about his struggle with mental illness in The Great Depresh, the combination stand-up special and documentary on HBO in collaboration with Judd Apatow. With humor, vulnerability, and honesty, Gary de-stigmatizes mental illness and offers hope for its treatment. Since the success of that program, Gulman has taken his new act on the road, spreading hope across the country to the millions of Americans who struggle with depression and other forms of mental illness. We are happy to share, as Gary likes to say, that his depression is in remish.

The Carolyn Grant Fay Humanitarian Award, named for The Jung Center's co-founder, will be awarded to Kimberly Hickson Spaw and David Spaw. David is a Jung Center trustee and co-founder of The Center’s Community for Conscious Aging and Healing Circles Houston. Kimberly volunteers her talents to nonprofits including The Jung Center and HSPVA Friends Board of Directors for the Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

Consuelo and Ian Macpherson and Sandy and Tim Sturm are co-chairing the Spring Benefit.

The reception takes place at 6:30 p.m. with the dinner and program at 7:30 p.m.  Funds raised ensure that The Jung Center continues to improve our community's mental health, encouraging people to pay attention to their emotional wellbeing.
