Texas Medical Center Orchestra's 15th Anniversary Concert
The Texas Medical Center Orchestra will mark its 15th anniversary of performing in Houston at its March 1, 2015 concert, which will take place at the Wortham Center's Cullen Theater at 5 p.m.
Continuing the Margaret Alkek Williams 2014-15 Concert Series, each composer featured was born 150 years ago, in 1865, thus the title of the concert is “Club 150”. The concert will feature Sebelius' Finlandia, with the KIPP Generation Choir, Michael Brown, Music Director; Glazunov's Saxophone Concerto in Eb, with Nathan Nabb, Saxophone; Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice; and Nielsen's Symphony No. 2, “The Four Temperaments.” Dr. Nathan Nabb is an Associate Professor of Saxophone at Stephen F. Austin State University, maintains a national and global schedule, and has played with the Houston and St. Louis Symphonies.
TMCO has worked with various Houston-area schools for several years. This year's partnership with KIPP Generations focuses on the theme of “The Four Temperaments”, as well as breathing life into the music. Illustrating those themes, artwork created by the KIPP Generations students and children participating in the Monart after school program, will be featured outside of the auditorium.
As part of its mission, TMCO partners with medically focused charities each year, to raise awareness and to help raise funds to benefit the charity's effort. For this concert, TMCO will collaborate with the American Lung Association, to bring awareness to lung health and lung disease prevention. TMCO continues its partnership with the Gran Fondo bicycle race, an annual event benefiting TMCO and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. A recommended ride for the BP MS150, which will be conducted two weeks later, the Gran Fondo ride will offer routes of 100+, 65+, and 40+ distance. The overall ride will be in the European gran fondo style with interval starts based on skill levels and distances.
