Eagles fans look on as St. Thomas kicks off the second quarter.
The highly anticipated St. Thomas vs. Strake Jesuit face-off took place in August at NRG Stadium. Students from across the city came sporting either green or red gear in support of their favorite team or home school.
Following a spirited tailgating session for the rival teams in the stadium parking lot, the frenzied fans piled into the massive stadium, occupying nearly half of the 97,000-square-foot arena. The division between the opposing teams was strikingly evident in the almost entirely red east side of the stadium vs. the nearly completely green west side, as a result of students’ spirited attire.
Cheers and chants could be heard from miles away as the game commenced with the first quarter kick-off. The Strake Jesuit offense was led by Michael Purvey, Kevin Graff and Andrew Eichelberger, and the St. Thomas defense by George Ikott, Tyler Johnson and Joe Ferguson.
Though the game waffled between the two rivals through the third quarter, it became clear that the win would go to the standing champions, the St. Thomas Eagles, (for the fourth consecutive year) by mid-fourth quarter. The final score was Eagles (St. Thomas), 42, Crusaders (Strake Jesuit), 35.
The game was an electrical, fun-filled event that gave students and friends a chance to come together.
