Launching literacy
More than 600 supporters of The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation’s Ladies for Literacy Guild gathered for the third annual Power of Literacy Luncheon at The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston. The luncheon theme was “Let’s Launch Literacy” and, true to the theme, the Grand Lobby and Ballroom were decorated with giant balloons. Each of the tables were decorated with colorful flowers and a cut-out of former First Lady Barbara Bush holding balloons. The event shined a light on the cause former First Lady Barbara Bush championed for nearly 30 years – literacy. The keynote speaker was former First Lady Laura Bush in a conversation moderated by Pierce Bush. Emcee was KPRC-TV anchor Rachel McNeill and featured speakers were Dr. Tom Pace, senior pastor at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, luncheon chair Cathy Cleary and Stephanie Tsuru, president of the Ladies for Literacy Guild. The event raised more than $350,000 to help support the Guild’s literacy initiatives.
