Honoring PapaG
Emeline Moss (pictured, on left), a sophomore at Memorial High School, painted a picture of her grandfather (on right), who served in Vietnam, by working from an old photo of him. She won a Scholastic Gold Key for her work, titled “Mornings in Vietnam.” “When I found the old photo of my grandpa in Vietnam, I was really drawn to the colors in the photo. The greens and purples in the picture bring out the dreary, depressed mood of the war. At the same time, the photo is peaceful; it’s a quiet moment during the chaos of the war.” She said she’s proud of her grandfather, Jim “PapaG” Gray. PapaG cheers for her and her siblings at sports games and is very supportive of her artwork.
