Sharing food in tough times
Students spent a week masked-up and volunteering with Chapelwood’s 15th annual SUMMIT local serving experience, sorting food, loading grocery boxes into cars, and interacting with people in the drive thru lines at the pantry.
Chapelwood United Methodist Church, in partnership with the Houston Food Bank, has helped more than 100,000 neighbors in need of food during the pandemic. Chapelwood’s Fair Haven Food Pantry, 1330 Gessner, expanded its operation in late March in light of escalating coronavirus numbers. Since then, it has provided 783,903 pounds of food valued at over $1.4 million. The Restoration Team, St. Francis Episcopal Church and Spring Branch Presbyterian Church are supporters, and Borden’s provides hundreds of gallons of milk twice a week. Church members, Iglesia Generaciones, SpringSpirit, National Charity League chapters, neighbors, and visiting teams have given 5,050 volunteer hours since March. In June, 195 students (pictured) spent a week masked-up, sorting food and loading boxes in the drive-through lines.
