Gifts in the garden
Mila Dawson (pictured), a fifth-grade student at Lovett Elementary, found a way to brighten the days of nursing-home residents at The Gardens of Bellaire. Inspired by her relationship with her grandmother, Mila knew that older adults sometimes feel lonely and isolated, especially during the pandemic. She decided to put together gift bags to deliver to Gardens of Bellaire residents, and had a huge response from the community to help her. After reaching out to family and friends, Mila received enough donations to purchase and create 80 gift bags with items including cozy winter socks, chocolates, and some daily household essentials. She worked with her family to complete the 80 bags in a single day, and packaged them with homemade cards. After her big success, Mila plans to repeat her efforts again in the future.
