Trafton Art Car

Trafton Art Car

Trafton art teacher Christie Harrison had been excited to work with students on designing an art car for the 2020 Art Car Parade, which was cancelled due to Covid. Although she realized the 2021 parade would not take place either, she was determined to complete the Trafton art car anyway. The quote “Make a mark and see where it takes you” is from the children’s book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, which is about fostering creativity. Following this theme, every member of the Trafton community – students who were learning virtually or in-person, parents, siblings, pets, alumni – had the opportunity to create a dot and stick it on the car. The dots are made of adhesive-backed, colored contact paper. On the last day of school, Ms. Harrison parked the art car in front of the school during student pickup so families could admire the car. She’s already got design plans underway for next year’s Art Car Parade and hopes that the fourth time is the charm – their first attempt was cancelled by Harvey and the second and third by the pandemic. Pictured are Trafton first graders in front of the art car. (Although the 2021 Art Car Parade did not take place, the event was reimagined into the Houston Art Car Experience, showcasing a limited number of art cars. See “Creative, Colorful Cars: The Houston Art Car Experience” for more.)
